The Importance of Local Exhibitions: A reminder

A little while ago I put up a post about the importance of going to local exhibitions. Here it is.

Another interesting Leeds space to look at is ‘Enjoy’, SEIZE is hosting a series of exhibitions there at the moment and you might want to take a look at what’s going on. Remember that there is nearly always something you can take from an exhibition. The other evening I went to the opening of ‘Twice as Nice’ which is the first of a series of shows.

This is how these shows are promoted on the Enjoy Facebook page:

Twice as Nice is a new series of exhibitions hosted by SEIZE Projects as part of their extended residency at Enjoy.

Each member of SEIZE will invite an artist to participate in a joint show whose practice they think will form an interesting counterpart to their own.

The first show in the series brings together SEIZE member Daisy Forster and Aitor Gonzalez, an artist living and working in Valencia. After an extended period of discourse between the two artists this show will attempt to question the perceived permanence of the sculptural object in relation to contemporary fluid environments.

SEIZE Projects is an artist-led organisation which works to promote and support contemporary art in the North.

As this blog is a focus on drawing the one thing I decided to pick out was the 3D drawing aspect. I was reminded of how forceful a line can be, especially when made directly with material, in this case elastic.

As always I'm interested in fixings and fittings just as much as the overall 'look' of the artwork. The plastic ties, nails and fence staples (U shaped nails), being just as much part of the look of the exhibits as the elastic. The importance of the elastic though is that it makes a 'taut' line. A 'taut' line has a certain authority or presence, black against white making the line almost appear from a distance, as if it has been drawn directly on the wall's surface. I was also interested in how the artists made a very simple link between the floor and the wall. As soon as this is done, a drawing starts to occupy the room space as an architectural feature.

Another issue is the concept of collaboration. As students you were asked to collaborate in the first year, but this is often forgotten. So a visit to these joint shows might be a useful thing to do if you are thinking about returning to collaborative work in the future.

The main point as always though is to remind you to keep informed and to get out to openings in small spaces.
