György Gordon

Just over the road from the Art College in the Leeds University Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is an exhibition of the work of Hungarian-born painter György Gordon. The exhibition includes paintings and drawings spanning the 1950s-1990s reflecting on Gordon's life and artistic journey, from his experience as a refugee to later work exploring isolation, alienation, and old age.
There is an excellent film on constant loop play that is well worth watching if you are interested in the role of drawing as a compositional aid.

His later paintings are a delicate meditation on the end of life, the way he works the surface of his paintings and drawings being a careful and delicate search for that edge between material presence and spirituality. Although little known outside Yorkshire his late paintings are as strong as many much more famous artists.

On Wednesday 15 Feb 2017 6.00pm to 7.pm there will be  a talk on his work in the gallery.
The exhibition finishes on the 25th of February.
